Breonna Taylor’s death has been the catalyst for a number of protests and the city of Louisville is still feeling the after effects of her untimely death. The general public is demanding the arrest of the officers who were involved. The officers stand accused of murdering the young woman in her sleep while using a no knock warrant at the wrong home.
One of the three officers was fired but the other two remain employed. Until all of the officers have been arrested, the protests are going to continue. Louisville was Taylor’s home and a protest took place on her behalf over the weekend. Black Lives Matter is responsible for the organization of the protest and an armed militia group also decided to make their presence felt.
The militia considers themselves to be 100 percent black. According to reports, they were not actually invited by the Black Lives Matter chapter that organized the protest. They are distancing themselves from the militia group and understandably so. The group is seeking justice for Breonna Taylor, not inviting militia groups to town.
These groups have a way of seeking out protests that do not directly involve them. The Not F—ing Around Coalition (yes, that is their actual name) was in the news recently because they decided to insert themselves into a protest that was taking place at Stone Mountain, Georgia. They were in the area because they were looking to destroy a sculpture of the Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Southern generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.
BREAKING: We just watched two people be taken onto stretchers at Baxter square on 12th and Jefferson. Metro safe has confirmed reports of shootings & that there are multiple victims. We heard the noises when people scattered to get behind cars, & to take a knee @WHAS11 #nightteam pic.twitter.com/h5AsPWlLbi

“Our initial goal was to have a formation of our militia in Stone Mountain to send a message that as long as you’re abolishing all these statues across the country, what about this one?”
This is the question that their leader Grand Master Jay posed to the crowd on Independence Day. Jay also claimed that they are not coming to these demonstrations to sing and chant. They are a black militia and they have little to no interest in protesting peacefully. The Louisville Metro Police Department was on high alert during the Saturday protest.

The police department wanted to make sure that everyone else was allowed to protest as peacefully as possible. Little did they know that this militia was about to meet their match. They were not the only ones on the scene who happened to be armed. Three militia members were taken to the hospital due to injuries that were caused by the gun of another member.
The shooting took place around 1 PM on Saturday. The injured militia members are said to be in stable condition and the injuries are not life threatening. Unarmed protesters were forced to scatter and flee once the shots rang out. One of the militia members told the media that “accidents happen”, as a means of explanation.
The Louisville protesters who have been marching on Breonna Taylor’s behalf are not pleased to see these militias in their town. They are actively undoing all of the positive activism that has already taken place. These are the outside agitators that people are getting tired of. Until they are removed from the equation, these protests are only going to get worse and worse.
How many times do we have to read stories like these before people wake up and realize what the true problem is? At least Grand Master Jay provided the Louisville Metro Police Department with a precise description of what the militia would be wearing, so that the officers would know exactly what to look for.
While Jay and his militia would argue that they are merely following the Constitution, they should be probably be taking some gun safety courses as well. These types of “accidents” are only detracting from the true purpose of these protests: obtaining justice for Breonna Taylor. Until groups like these decide to get over themselves, these types of protests will continue to be marred by senseless violence.
