Kids Ask Trump Questions at White House—and One Has Everyone Laughing

“National Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day” at the White House gave reporters’ children the mic—and their innocent curiosity about President Donald Trump made for a heartwarming, and at times hilarious, press briefing.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt welcomed the children into the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, where they asked everything from Trump’s food preferences to his hug habits. The first question came from a shy little girl, relayed by her mother: “She wants to know if President Trump likes to give hugs.”
Leavitt smiled and replied, “You know, I think he does. I have seen him give many hugs to children and his family and our beautiful First Lady. So, yes. I do think he likes to give hugs.”

The questions kept coming, getting more adorable—and more entertaining. When asked about the president’s favorite food, Leavitt replied without hesitation: “Probably steak.” Another child wanted to know his favorite ice cream. Leavitt said, “I have seen the president eat ice cream sundaes before with chocolate sauce and some toppings too,” then joked, “It’s a very popular policy position to have,” as hands shot into the air in agreement.
But the moment of the day came when a young girl asked the most unexpectedly funny question of the bunch: “Which is Donald Trump’s favorite president, besides himself?”
Laughter erupted. Leavitt paused before answering, “It’s a good question. Because it would be, probably himself. Perhaps he would say George Washington. I know he speaks very highly of George Washington, who was of course, the first president of our great country.” She added that Washington’s portrait hangs prominently above the fireplace in the Oval Office. “Good question,” she said, smiling.
Later, President Trump made a surprise appearance on the South Lawn where he mingled with the children and showed off his signature dance moves. Videos posted online captured the president smiling, clapping, and dancing along with the kids—clearly enjoying the moment as much as they were.

First Lady Melania Trump also joined the festivities, stopping by to admire the kids’ arts and crafts projects, which included decorating flags. Videos of Melania interacting with the children—smiling, kneeling to chat, and encouraging their creativity—spread quickly online, prompting a wave of positive comments.
The event offered a rare, lighthearted window into the Trump White House as it continues its second-term agenda. The questions may have been simple, but the answers—especially the one about Trump’s “favorite president”—delivered the kind of genuine moment no press secretary could script.
As Leavitt said after the event, “Today was about connecting with the next generation, and giving them a chance to see how their government works. And if that comes with a few ice cream sundaes and some dancing, all the better.”
